Format proposal

The Future of the Bogey Boys Classic

Grow the field. Keep the stakes. Make every round matter.

A proposed format that keeps the pairs vibe, chaos, bragging rights, and spray-tan consequences.

Five rounds • Individual Stableford • Daily pair best-ball • Mini-games • Prize rewards

Why change?

The Current Scramble Is Great. It Just Does Not Scale Cleanly.

6players

Perfect

8players

Awkward partner math

10players

The format starts breaking

The rub

Two-man scramble works perfectly at six

More players create awkward partner combinations

Adding rounds or courses is not realistic

Saying no to friends every year gets old

The goals

Let 7-10+ players join

Keep the championship legitimate

Give weaker golfers real side paths

Stay easy to score and track

More people. Same soul.

Recommendation

One True Champion. Daily Pair Winners. Everyone Still Alive.

01

Individual Modified Stableford

Everyone plays their own ball. Points reward good holes and erase blow-ups quickly.

02

Daily Pair Best-Ball

Each round creates a new pair. The lower gross score on each hole counts for the team.

03

Mini-Games and Races

Side competitions reward recovery, improvement, clutch shots, and chaos.

Individual championship stays pure. Daily pairs keep the old trip energy.

Modified Stableford

Reward Good Golf. Erase the Blow-Ups.

Once double bogey is reached, pick up.Finish for fun only if pace allows. No official handicaps needed. No fake-handicap arguments at dinner.

Two competitions

One Round. Two Leaderboards.

Your Round

Individual Stableford

Builds toward the overall champion.

Daily Pair Best-Ball

Determines the daily team winner.

Everyone still plays their own ball. The same scorecard feeds both competitions.

Morning snake draft

Every Morning Starts With a Draft.

Who are you taking?

  • Round 1 draft order is randomized
  • Later rounds use reverse overall Stableford standings
  • Last place selects first
  • Tournament leader selects last
  • Avoid repeat partners until necessary
  • New teams are formed before every round
  • Odd-player fields use an organizer-defined blind draw or rotation

Daily pair best-ball

Keep the Partner Energy.

Both partners play their own ball

The lower gross score on each hole becomes the team score

Add the 18 selected scores

Lowest team total wins the day

The pair event is separate from the overall Stableford championship

Daily mini-games

Keep Them Simple. Keep Them Witnessed. Keep Them Fun.

Skill shots

Closest to Pin

On the designated par 3, the player whose tee shot finishes closest to the hole wins. The ball must remain on the putting surface.

Long Drive in the Fairway

On the designated hole, the player with the longest drive that comes to rest in the fairway wins. Drives finishing in the rough, hazard, or out of bounds are not eligible.

Longest Putt Made

The player who holes the longest putt during the round wins. Distance should be agreed upon by the group at the time the putt is made.

Double Closest to Pin

Two designated par 3s are selected for the round. The winner is the player with the closest tee shot on either hole. If the same player wins both holes, they sweep the event.

Chaos and recovery

Bounce-Back Chain

Awarded to the player with the longest streak of pars or better immediately following a bogey or worse. The challenge rewards resilience and the ability to recover after mistakes.

Fairway Finder

Awarded to the player who hits the most fairways in regulation during the round. Ties are broken by total fairway percentage.

The Great Escape

Awarded to the player who records the most successful recovery shots leading to par or better after missing the fairway, hitting into the trees, or finding trouble. The group determines qualifying recoveries.

Worst Saved Hole

Awarded for the most impressive save of the day. Examples include making par after hitting into a hazard, punching out from the trees, or scrambling from multiple difficult lies. Group vote decides the winner.

Daily drama

Round Winner

Awarded to the player who records the highest Modified Stableford score for the day. Ties are broken using the final nine-hole score, then final six, final three, and finally the 18th hole.

Nine-Hole Lightning

Awarded to the player with the highest Stableford score on either the front nine or back nine, predetermined before the round. A rough opening or finish does not eliminate your chance to win.

Par-3 Cup

Awarded to the player with the lowest cumulative score across all par 3s during the round. Ties are broken by the designated Closest to the Pin hole.

Final-Round Hero

Awarded only during the final round to the player with the highest Modified Stableford score of the day. This ensures everyone has something meaningful to play for until the very last putt of the trip.

Pick three or four per round. Too many games starts to feel like accounting.

Season-long races

Side Races That Do Not Need Handicaps.

The Climber

Biggest improvement from Round 1 to the best later round

The Grinder

Most zero-point holes followed by a point-or-better hole

Nine-Hole Lightning

Best single nine-hole Stableford score

Par-3 Cup

Best cumulative score on par 3s

The Metronome

Smallest scoring spread across five rounds

Final-Round Hero

Best final round outside the overall top three

Better golfers may win the championship. That is fine. The side races create other legitimate paths.
